Exemptions for DePaul University Placement Tests

All Students (First Year, Transfer, Adult and Current Students)

School/College

Writing
Modern Language
All Schools/Colleges Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB or BC score of 3 or higher
AP English Language and Composition score of 4 or higher
AP Language or Literature score of 3 or higher in German, French or Spanish
IB Higher Level Math 5 or higher
SAT Verbal 600 or greater
AP Latin Literature or Vergil score of 3 or higher
CLEP Calculus 50 or higher
ACT Reading Score of 20 or greater AND an ACT English scores of 24 or greater
CLEP score of 50 or higher in German, French or Spanish


Students with Transfer Credit

Liberal Arts & Sciences excluding Biology, Economics, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science

 

All other LA&S majors:

Exempt from the placement test if the student transfers Calculus, quantitative reasoning, and in some cases certain statistics courses, with a grade of  "D" or higher

LA&S majors that require  Calculus:

Exempt from the placement test if the student transfers Calculus with a grade of "C-" or higher

Successful completion of "Composition and Rhetoric II" with a C- or better.
Applies to all schools.
Continued study in a language requires a placement test.
Applies to all schools
Commerce
College Calculus with a grade of C- or better

Computing and Digital Media
College Calculus with a grade of C or better
Education
College Calculus with a grade of C or better



    •    Your transfer credit must be noted on your DePaul record for you to be exempt. All external credit should be sent to the Office of Admission.
    •    Adult students in the
School For New Learning must take placement tests through that school, call 312/362.8001.
    •    Non-Degree students should consult course prerequisites before enrolling in a Math, Writing or Modern Language course. Non-Degree students will need to contact dpcl@depaul.edu to request a placement test be activated.
